Objects in mirror are closer than they appear

The next week is going to get crazy as we prepare to move. And I started looking at my April calendar to see all the appointments that are already scheduled. Ugh. And then I realized...at the end of next week, the babies will be 6 months old.

Wowzers.

Hard to believe that they're technically 6 months old. Also hard to believe that they are technically 2.5 month-olds. (Also hard to believe how I can keep all that straight).Somehow, standing here now it seems like that happened so fast. I'm not sure how - it has been the longest 6 months of my life I'm pretty sure.

They both are over 11 pounds. That's more than 5 times their birth weight. It's hard to look at them now and pick them up and remember holding them for the first time and it didn't even feel like there was anything in our hands. And that they could have then easily fit into the cup I'm currently drinking out of with no problems.

So looking forward to moving into our new house and playing in the yard and spending the summer outside with our little ones. The "big" ones whose weight is now in the double digits. :)

NICU Props

They've been running lots of UNMC commercials lately. They have two that are NICU stories. They both make me smile because we are one of those people and cry a little because we are one of those people. One of them even shows a little bit of one of our favorite neonatologists :) Thanks UNMC NICU! (You can click on the links below to watch the commercials and see some cute babies).

Full time

So I always new there was nothing easy about taking care of babies - and I was prepared (for what I could be) to take care of 2 babies. But these two are a full time job all on their own.

Seriously - they need their own personal assistant.

Parker has had regular follow-ups with the pediatrician because of the tube feedings. He's also seen the eye doctor a few times and the surgeon and the ENT. Throw in a trip or two to Children's Hospital for blood work to be drawn, weekly visits from home care and now a new appointment next week with a speech therapist for feeding help for him - wowzers.

Payton has had eye check ups, been to the pediatrician, Children's Hospital for blood work, pulmonology and home care visits.

I write everything down in 3 places so that I don't forget anything. Yesterday when I showed up for Parker's eye appointment and they didn't have him listed I almost jumped down the lady's throat since it is a major logistical endeavor to get things arranged for appointments. Especially when the appointment is only for one and you don't want to expose them to any more germs than you have to.

So Chris and I are looking at possibilities of what's going to happen after we move. We've been warned by several docs that they can't go to daycare.

Hmmmmmm...what to do, what to do.

How did we get here?

I read something today about someone soaking in time with their kids and enjoying where they were and happily asking "how did we get here?" I like that question.

How did we get to have twins, who were 5 months old on Tuesday? How did we get to where we could bring both of them home? How did I become so well versed in all medical things related to the NICU and can hold a conversation and probably fake someone out that I"m a nurse there? How did we get to the point where I'm able to soothe and mostly handle the both of them at them same time? How did we get to where we're going baby PT and speech therapy at home because we paid that much attention at the hospitals? How did I get to where I'm brave enough to tell the kiddos that we're 'going on an adventure' and pack them and all equipment up in the car by myself and head out about town? Who knew?

But I wouldn't change it. This journey we've already been on together has made us our little family. This is how we got here and now we wouldn't have it any other way.
